Dig for Devonport

The Dig for Devonport
has been a great success. During the summer of 2009, staff from the Diggin'It Dig for Devonport team, worked with local residents from estates in the Devonport catchment, providing them with a range of edible plants and flowers, then helping them to plant up a range of wooden planters, (provided by Sovereign Housing Association). The residents were then mentored during the following months and shown how to harvest the crops, and, how to use them.

The follow on from this summer campaign will be the planting of over 40 fruit trees along with many Raspberries, Currants, Blackberries and Blueberries. All of these will be going into back gardens throughout the estates, followed by yet more edible plantings into the wooden planters to provide crops for the coming summer.

We would like to thank not only the Sovereign Housing Association for their support, but the many residents from the Devonport area who have volunteered to take part in the campaign, and who have welcomed us into their community.

We are now looking to expand this campaign into other parts of Plymouth, so watch this space.

If you get involved, Dig for Devonport will support you in growing what you can in your own home too. For example, you could grow herbs and salads in window boxes, front doorsteps or balconies. If enough people are keen to get involved, we hope to gain extra funding to expand the project to other places in the Devonport Regeneration area.

Dig for Devonport is organised through a partnership of Diggin It and local permaculture designer Tess Wilmot. Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership (DRCP) has provided the funding.

Nature is abundant! Often the plants planted in gardens and public spaces are just ornamental, with little to offer wildlife or people.

EDIBLE LANDSCAPES combine fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, perennial plants including herbs, edible flowers and vegetables with ornamental plants into attractive and productive designs.

Join us to make Devonport greener!

How can you help if you live in the area? We would love to know if you are interested in growing food! If you are an experienced gardener, please share your skills with us. If you know someone who might be interested, please tell them about us. You could contact your housing association and let them know you are interested in this project. Your support could enable Dig for Devonport find more funding to expand this project to a wider area. Help us inspire others.
