Horticultural Aims

Man diggingDiggin’ It is committed to using Organic principles throughout, recognising and implementing Garden Organic (formerly Henry Doubleday Research Association) guiding principles. We have decided not to undertake Soil Association certification at this stage, due to the size of the project and the cost involved. However, all our produce has been grown following Garden Organic recommendations.

Environmental Aims

Pepper flowerAll our organic waste is recycled and composting plays an important part of our Organic regime, feeding our soil and helping us grow strong healthy fruit and vegetables. All materials are recycled where possible, and a state-of the-art composting toilet has now been installed! The use of renewable resources will be relied upon wherever it is practically possible, including rainwater harvesting and using electricity supplied by Ecotricity. We hope to be able to use wind and solar power in the future.

Ethos

The overriding aim of the project is to provide an environment that will benefit a range of vulnerable or socially disadvantaged people, helping them to become better integrated within the community and bringing communities together. Bulbs sprouting. Those involved with Diggin’ It have gained skills and confidence, self-esteem and self-sufficiency; some have become ready for training or work, enabling them to participate more fully in society. Diggin It provides participants with an awareness of growing and producing their own healthy food as well as reducing waste through composting and recycling.
